The Dental Hygienist provides preventive and periodontal dental hygiene care under the direction of a dentist. Responsibilities may include reviewing medical and dental histories, taking dental radiographs, performing oral assessments, periodontal charting, prophylaxis and periodontal therapy, applying fluoride and sealants as appropriate, providing oral hygiene instruction and patient education, documenting treatment, and identifying oral health conditions that require evaluation by the dentist. The Dental Hygienist may also provide local anesthesia or other services when permitted by state law and the hygienist’s credentials. Duties may vary based on state regulations and the practice setting.
The Dental Assistant supports the dentist during patient treatment and assists with the day-to-day operations of the dental office. Responsibilities may include preparing treatment rooms, seating and dismissing patients, taking dental radiographs, assisting chairside during procedures, fabricating provisonal restorations, sterilizing and disinfecting instruments and treatment areas, setting up and breaking down operatories, maintaining dental supplies, taking impressions or digital scans as directed, and providing patient education and post-operative instructions. The Dental Assistant may also assist with administrative tasks such as scheduling, patient records, and other front-office duties as needed. Duties may vary based on state regulations, office needs, and the assistant’s training and credentials.
